The countdown to Christmas has well and truly begun.
With so much to do and to look forward to – nights out with friends and colleagues, visits to Santa with the children, festive concerts, services and plays to attend, and shopping trips in our bustling towns and cities – taking all the wonder and magic in.
Busy, busy, go, go!! I’m wrecked just thinking of all “the stuff” there is to be done.
Christmas goes by so fast and without letting it all just pass me by, I thought it would be a good idea to plan my relaxation time over the Christmas holidays and what better way to do so, than to kick back and watch all the best Christmas films.
So, with this in mind, I asked everyone in our office for their top 5 Christmas movies. Here’s what we came up with........
1. It’s a Wonderful Life
Few films define Christmas like Frank Capra's 1946 fantasy starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, who, on the verge of committing suicide, is visited by an angel who shows him the true importance of his life.
2. White Christmas
Featuring a new version of the song from which the film gets its title (and which was originally sung by star Bing Crosby in Holiday Inn), this 1954 musical features Crosby and Danny Kaye as music-act partners who team up with two sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to help their former military commander save his Vermont lodge.
3. Home Alone
Macaulay Culkin is forgotten by his family and forced to battle a couple of dimwit thieves (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) around Christmas in this enduring children's adventure from director Chris Columbus and writer John Hughes.
4. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Rarely has a series' third installment been the equal of its two predecessors, but such is the case with this threequel involving Clark (Chevy Chase), Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), Audrey (Juliette Lewis), and Rusty Griswold's (Johnny Galecki) mishap-besieged family get-together.
5. The Sound of Music
And for me, Christmas isn’t Christmas until I have watch The Sound of Music with my children snuggled up on the couch beside me! The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg, Austria in 1938 who is sent to the home of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
